30 South Pennine Saunters

The area is a very special mix of built heritage, remote moorlands, deep wooded vales and twisting valleys and cloughs, richly endowed with pretty villages, vibrant towns and tempting country inns. Everyday service buses reach to the heart of this increasingly popular destination-of-choice, offering easy access to the attractions and great walking country. Take a 663-5 bus from Keighley to Haworth to lose yourself in Brontë heritage, combining visits to the Parsonage Museum with moorland strolls to the sisters' favourite countryside places, maybe returning on the steam railway. From sublime Hebden Bridge, with its raft of galleries, crafts and alternative shops, the 591 or "E" route buses climb to pretty Heptonstall, from where walks radiate into the fabulous wooded gorges of Hebden Dale and Colden Clough. Or take a leisurely trip on the 590 service linking Halifax and Rochdale, along the Calder Valley through Mytholmroyd, Hebden Bridge and Todmorden with ample chance to get off and explore the countryside towered over by Stoodley Pike or the curious Bridestones and threaded by the superb Rochdale Canal.
A great upland journey is on the 500 service from Keighley to Hebden Bridge, across the moorland edge in Brontë country, or ride the 906 summer weekends service from Hebden Bridge to remote Widdop and spectacular Hardcastle Crags.
